Outfit Order | Tahiti Transition

Friday, January 4, 2013

Hi guys, happy FridayAs some of you may know, one of my all time favorite type of posts to do is an "Outfit Order" (as seen here and here). Whenever a reader writes me asking for help to find an outfit for an upcoming occasion, I am always so psyched! Recently, lovely reader (and fellow blogger!), Danielle, had a [very sweetly worded] request about a vacation she is going on in a few weeks:

"Hi Allie!
I love your blog and your style! You remind me of Jennifer Lawrence in Hunger Games with your piercing blue eyes and cute smile :)
I have a request. I am going from cold snowy Chicago to Tahiti at the end of January and would love some ideas for what to pack for the warm weather or how to transition clothing from the cold to the heat."

Well, without ever meeting each other, Danielle obviously knows the way to my heart  because I love J.Law and The Hunger Games! (Some of my family and friends even call me "Katniss"... annnd I was Katniss for Halloween this year.) Thank you so much for the kind words and the request - it was such a fun one to do! I got to pretend like I was also going on an adventure to Tahiti :D Below are some ideas for what to pack when you're boarding a plane in freezing temps but landing in the tropics of Tahiti.

Since you have quite a few hours to spend on the plane, try wearing a comfortable pair of leggings with some cute flats or sneakers -- you can wear them when you go out on fun adventures around the city -- to keep comfy and warm for the long (and often times chilly) flight. Don't forget a light scarf... and a fully charged iPod!

Forever 21 black capri length leggings: Forever 21 $5.80
Old Navy grey lace trimmed tank top: Old, from 2010
Charming Charlie red lace slip-ons: Gift from my mom in 2012
-Similar styles: Kohl's $14.99 (on sale from $49.99) or DSW $19.94 (on sale from $69)
If you want to have super comfortable & cuddly shoes for the flight, you could try these from Kohl's on sale for $9.60 from $24.

New York & Company
brightly colored scarf: Old, from 2011
-Similar styles: Cotton On $5 (on sale from $9.95), ASOS $7.92 (on sale from $28.14), Kohl's $12.99 (on sale from $20) or Kohl's $12.99 (on sale from $20)

Pack a pair of your favorite cut off jorts (AKA jeans shorts), skinny jeans, a few tank tops, a cardigan or two, and plenty of dresses! As for shoes, I'd stick to stylish sandals and flats rather than heels. (Personally, every time I bring heels with me on a trip I never actually end up wearing them and they just take up a bunch of valuable suitcase space. However, if you can't part with your stilettos, stick with a neutral wear-with-anything pair.) These basics will take you from day to night with ease.

DIY 'ed Gap denim cutoff shorts: Goodwill for $5 - They started off looking like total Mom Jeans, but I cut and distressed them myself... and voila!
-Similar styles: Forever 21 $9.88 (on sale from $12.50), Cotton On $10 (on sale from $19.95) or Cotton On $12.50 (on sale from $24.95)

Old Navy fuchsia tank top: Old, from 2011
-Similar styles (both from Forever 21): $4.80 or $6.80
O'Neill blue sandals: Old, from PacSun in 2011
-Similar styles: Kohl's $11.99 (on sale from $39.99) or ASOS $18.47 (on sale from $70.36)

There are tons of stylish dress options that can easily be used as a bathing suit cover up during days spent at the beach but can also be dressed up and accessorized to wear out on the town at night. A few examples:

Lauren Conrad floral print ruffled dress (Also mentioned in this post): Kohl's, on sale for $12.80 from $64
(I had a $10 off coupon, so I got it for like $3!).
-Similar styles: Kohl's $12.80 (on sale from $64), Forever 21 $14.50Kohl's $18 (on sale from $60), Forever 21 $19.80, Old Navy $20 (on sale from $29.94), Kohl's $24 (on sale from $80) or Old Navy $29.94

Lastly, don't forget to pack your favorite swimsuits, sunglasses, and sun protection to protect your skin from the rays!

Yes, 110 SPF is a real thing. I tend to get paranoid about skin cancer and wrinkles...

Kirra floral print top & Victoria's Secret bikinis: Floral top was given to me by my BFF Chelsea from PacSun. The other three pieces are all older from Victoria's Secret

H&M aviator sunglasses: $4.99
Banana Boat sunscreen: $9.59

With all the added fees airlines are now charging to check baggage, we all like to try to squeeze as much as we possibly can on our "one carry on and one personal item." It can definitely be hard to fit a whole week's worth of clothing (or more) with such a seemingly small allowance. In order to make it work be sure to pack clothing that easily rolls up (as seen in the suitcase picture above. Seriously try this method if you don't already- you can fit so much more and, if done properly, your belongings will arrive wrinkle free!), as well as taking along pieces that mix and match easily and can be dressed up or down. Following these tips should help ensure a vacation full of amazing memories (and tons of pictures in your cute island-y best)!

Thank you so much for the request, Danielle! I hope you have an absolutely fantastic time in Tahiti and that these outfit ideas were able to help take you from Chicago to the black sand beaches.  Safe travels!

  1. THANK YOU SO MUCH ALLIE!!
I was so excited to see this post! I love all the outfits, especially the plane one. I never thought to wear leggings; I usually wear jeans that end up feeling stiff and uncomfortable after sitting on a plane for a while. I am just starting to get into scarves too, so I will be sure to bring mine :)I totally agree with you about rolling your clothes to save space in your suitcase. Now I've gotten my whole family to do it as well haha! I really appreciate you taking the time to post this. Wishing you a wonderful and happy 2013!
